Another Republican Michigan Congressman Announces Retirement

WASHINGTON (AP) - Rep. Dave Camp, the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, says he will not seek another term.

     The Michigan Republican said in a statement Monday that he will retire after 12 terms in the House. He was term-limited as chairman of the committee.
 
     His district is strongly Republican and the GOP is expected to hold the seat.
 
     Camp is the second senior Michigan Republican to announce his retirement. Rep. Mike Rogers said Friday he would retire.

US Recognizes Michigan Same-Sex Couple Marriages

DETROIT (AP) — U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has extended federal recognition to the Michigan marriages of about 300 same-sex couples that took place before a federal appeals court put those unions on hold.

Holder's action on Friday enables the government to extend eligibility for federal benefits to the couples. It came two days after Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said Michigan won't recognize the marriages performed last weekend. U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman struck down the gay marriage ban the day before.

'Yooper' Getting Recognition As Dictionary Entry

ESCANABA, Mich. (AP) -- The term "yooper" is getting recognition in the dictionary.

Residents of Michigan's Upper Peninsula call themselves "yoopers." The Daily Press of Escanaba and MLive.com report officials announced Monday that the term will appear in the 2014 edition of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, which goes on sale next month.
