Chrysta H. Cherrie
Chrysta Cherrie's love of radio sparked as an elementary schooler in Akron, OH, when she produced her own "shows" by taping her favorite songs off of the radio, accompanied with her youthful commentary. As a teen, when her family moved to a rural suburb, the universal nature of music and the gratification of sharing it with others -- as well as others sharing it with her -- was Chrysta's constant companion, cementing a dream of a future behind the microphone. Rational heads prevailed, and come college Chrysta pursued an Electronic Media & Film degree at Eastern Michigan University. With student-run radio station WQBR, she began doing radio in earnest, and professor/WQBR faculty advisor suggested Chrysta explore opportunities at WEMU.
Chrysta joined WEMU in 2002 as a music librarian and has been fortunate enough to wear many hats around the station since. In relatively chronological order: Brazilian Sol/Cuban Fantasy producer; overnight program host; Big City Blues Cruise producer; Outside Within program host; Groove Yard/89.1 Jazz with Jessica Webster producer; substitute program host. In addition to learning the fundamentals of various styles of jazz, blues, and international music from the program hosts she supported, Chrysta's music interests -- girl groups, Borscht Belt comedy albums, and left-of-the-dial rock, to name a few -- were nurtured by an arts-oriented professional life, where she served in roles such as AnnArbor.com entertainment producer, Michigan Theater marketing assistant, and AllMusic.com web editor. Chrysta lives in Ypsilanti with her witty writer husband, enjoying pop culture, food, and the company of the world's happiest rescue dog (Digby, a pitbull/rottweiler mix).
