Jorge Avellan

Jorge is an Emmy Award winning journalist who has more than ten years of experience covering Metro Detroit.   He started his career with the Spanish language television network Univision in Texas.   After an Univision executive saw him over a television news feed he was offered a job as a television news reporter in Detroit Michigan.  A few years later he moved on to English television, also in Detroit.   Jorge has covered every big news story in the last decade in Detroit from presidential visits, bankruptcy, city hall scandals, Super Bowl, World Series and of course the North American International Auto Show.  He also once flew inside a Red Bull Air Race stunt plane reaching speeds of up to six G-forces.   But his favorite stories to cover are people stories, the ones that residents get to tell their stories. Jorge is now thrilled to be reporting for 89.1 WEMU.  Email him him story ideas or tips!

A suicide ends one life and  it forever alters the lives of family and friends. It is an issue that, despite increased awareness, is still discussed in hushed tones and often with stigma attached. On Tuesday, February 7th, the Washtenaw County Public Health Department will host a town hall forum on suicide prevention at the Learning Resource Center in Ann Arbor.  With that in mind, 89.1 WEMU's Jorge Avellan delves into the deeply personal impact of suicide and what measures are being taken to better protect at-risk lives in our community.

The city of Ann Arbor will roll out  the lethal portion of its deer management plan today. As sharpshooters take to city parks and nature areas, and a few selected sites on the University of Michigan campus, the group Friends of Ann Arbor Wildlife in Nature, or FAAWN,  will march and protest.

Hundreds of Washtenaw County residents will make their way to our nation's capital this weekend to patrticipate in the national Women's March for human rights.  Even more will march and rally here at home.

A student conduct hearing was held on Tuesday for one of the 15 Eastern Michigan University students identified as having participated in a peaceful sit-in at the Student Center last fall.  The protest was spawned by  racist graffiti discovered on campus.

200 people participated in a Martin Luther King, Jr. march hosted by Ypsilanti Community High School students.  The event took place after students expressed racial and immigration concerns when Donald Trump was elected president last November.

Ypsilanti's city council amended its human rights ordinance to include immigration and gender identity.

By the end of 2017, the American Center for Mobility facility in Ypsilanti Township is expected to be up and running.  It will serve as testing facility for autonomous vehicles.  And as the North American International Auto Show is underway in Detroit, several of its participants spoke about the future of the center.
