One Ann Arbor City Council member, Sally Hart Peterson admits that she hasn't seen any evidence of back room dealings while on city council but would like to start a discussion on conflict of interest issues, adding that several second ward residents have raised the issue with her.  Harts says making sure everyone has the same understanding of conflict of interest laws is a challenge, with many in the community making a mistake when it comes to council members and the University of Michigan.

Peterson maintains that a conflict of interest policy could be a first step towards an overall ethics policy for council members. However, Hart believes it would likely be too big of a challenge to address all at once.
