City officials in Ann Arbor are amping up their efforts to improve crosswalk visibility following the death of a 16 year-old high school student last week near Huron High School.
City administrator Howard Lazarus has asked the city's public services department to put message boards near crosswalks until enhanced street lighting can be installed.
Ann Arbor mayor Christopher Taylor says the problem is decades old.
"Placement of street lights is based upon engineering standards that are focused on the automobile. That is an inherited system. We need to change it, so it focuses on all transit users."
Mayor Taylor says it's deeply important to the city that all of their crosswalks be safe. The mayor said the city spends about $2 million a year on street lighting but admits that is substantially under-resourced.
A 16 year-old community high school student was killed one week ago today while crossing Fuller Road near Huron High School.
