Ann Arbor Schools Hire Company For Custodial Work

a2schools.org

The Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education has approved hiring company to run its custodial services starting in July.
The Ann Arbor News reports 114 custodians will no longer be employees of the district as of June 30. Crew chiefs also would be laid off.
The board approved outsourcing the jobs to the GCA Services in a 5-2 vote, which came during a seven-hour meeting that began Wednesday. The private company's offer of a $4.4 million contract for three years was the most attractive to the district.
Board President Deb Mexicotte says a proposal from current custodians to form an employee-owned cooperative came too late in the process to be considered. The district says privatizing custodial service in the schools is expected save about $2 million.
