A press conference was held at Eastern Michigan University over concerns of job cuts and food quality if the administration decides to privatize its dining services.
A crowd of over forty EMU students, employees and community members gathered at theHalle Library on campus. Among them was political science student StevenKwasny, who says a boycott could take place if the university decides to outsource. A petition is circulating to stop Eastern from offering Chartwells a dining service contract.
"We can possibly do that if that's what it takes. Because more and more students that find out about this change, they're adding their signatures, it's getting passed through the networks. This change is being done over the summer without their knowing."
In a statement, EMU interim presidentDonald Loppnow says the university does not have the funds to expand its dining facilities, but an outside vendor does. The issue is expected to be discussed at the next EMU board of regents meeting on June 21st.
