The Diary of a Teenage Girl

“The Diary of a Teenage Girl” follows Minnie (BelPowley) who, like most teenage girls, is longing for love, acceptance and a sense of purpose in the world. Minnie begins a complex love affair with her mother's (Kristen Wiig) boyfriend, "the handsomest man in the world," Monroe Rutherford (Alexander Skarsgård). What follows is a sharp, funny and provocative account of one girl's sexual and artistic awakening, without judgment.   

"The Diary of a Teenage Girl” opens Friday at the Michigan with a special post film discussion with the author of the critically-acclaimed graphic novel on which the film is based - Ann Arbor’s own Phoebe Gloeckner! 7 pm screening.

Z for Zachariah

In “Z for Zachariah,” in the wake of a nuclear war, a young woman survives on her own, fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, until she discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being. A distraught scientist, he's nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desperate search for others. A fragile, imperative strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger enters the valley, their precarious bond begins to unravel.  Starring Margot Robbie, ChiwetelEjiofor, and Chris Pine, “Z for Zachariah” opens Friday at the State.

Forrest Gump

The Summer Classic Film Series continues with “Forrest Gump!”  Despite his sub-normal IQ, Forrest (Tom Hanks) leads a truly charmed life, with a ringside seat for many of the most memorable events of the second half of the 20th Century.  Meanwhile, as the remarkable parade of his life goes by, Forrest never forgets Jenny (Robin Wright Penn), the girl he loved as a boy, who makes her own troubled journey through the turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s.  “Forrest Gump” plays Sunday,August 30 at 1:30 PM and Tuesday,September 1 at 7 PM at the Michigan Theater. 

Tangerine

In “Tangerine,” after hearing that her boyfriend/pimp cheated on her while she was in jail, a transgender prostitute and her best friend set out to find him on Christmas Eve and teach him and his new lover a lesson. This frenetically paced Sundance NextFest 2015 selection was filmed entirely on an iPhone throughout the streets of Los Angeles.  “Tangerine” plays Tuesday and Wednesday, September 1 and 2 at the Michigan.

No Escape

“No Escape” centers on an American businessman (Owen Wilson) as he and his family settle into their new home in Southeast Asia. Suddenly finding themselves in the middle of a violent political uprising, they must frantically look for a safe escape as rebels mercilessly attack the city. Also starring Pierce Brosnan and Lake Bell, “No Escape” opened Wednesday.

We Are Your Friends

“We Are Your Friends” is set in the world of electronic music and Hollywood nightlife, where an aspiring 23-year-old DJ named Cole (Zac Efron) spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for his mentor’s much younger girlfriend. With Cole's forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he is destined for.  “We Are Your Friends” opens Friday.
