Washtenaw County, MI – On a day the Washtenaw County jail was accepting only the most violent offenders due to overcrowding, the county's board of commissioners approved a new jail population manager position Wednesday night.
County Administrator Bob Guenzel says the position should help determine overall jail crowding conditions, and also look at individual cases so the jail doesn't end up at maximum capacity.
Guenzel says he agrees with commissioners that the new position should be regularly reviewed and should be eliminated if it doesn't ease overcrowding. However, he says the position will only be able to ease the situation, and some jail expansion will still be necessary.
