Democratic State Senate Leader: Slow Down Concealed Pistol Bill

Legislation to streamline approval of concealed pistol licenses is likely to clear the state Senate this week.

The bills are similar to legislation Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed last month over concerns it would put domestic abuse victims in danger. But that controversial language was taken out of Senate Bill 34 when it was reintroduced.

Still, state Senate Democratic Leader Jim Ananich, D-Flint, says he thinks the legislation is moving too fast.

“I’d like to see us slow this train down a little bit and make sure people feel comfortable,” said Ananich. “And is it something that needs to happen? That’s a question I think we need to ask before we do anything - is there a problem that this is fixing? And if there’s not, why are we doing it?”

“This is likely to be the first bill that we pass this session, and it’s hard to see where the urgency is.”

Bill sponsor Sen. Mike Green, R-Mayville, assured his colleagues in the Senate last week that the bill is the same legislation the chamber passed in its last session, just without controversial language opponents said would have allowed some people with personal protection orders against them to obtain CPLs.
