Eastern Michigan Students Face Discipline After Protest

Eastern Michigan University

YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) - Three students who protested after racist graffiti was found on buildings at Eastern Michigan University are now facing discipline for continuing a peaceful sit-in at a student center after it closed for the evening.

A university official says the students violated the school's student code of conduct by continuing their protest after being warned to leave.  They could receive one-year suspensions.

The Ann Arbor News reports students and faculty are urging the university's administration to drop the cases. Political science professor Judy Kullberg calls the university's decision to punish the protesters "wrongheaded."  She says the three students are "wonderful young men with tremendous leadership qualities."

The graffiti targeted African-Americans and was immediately removed.
