The media landscape is changing. Tomorrow's journalists will need to know how to write and how to prepare dynamic content like audio, video and graphics. A new major at Eastern Michigan University will prepare students for this new reality.
Media Studies and Journalism combines aspects of Journalism and Electronic Media with Film Studies. Carol Schlagheckis coordinator of the journalism program. She says this combination is already proving successful. "Like Vinnie Goodwill who is covering the Detroit Pistons for the Detroit News is often on television granting interviews and he was a double major in electronic media and in journalism, which has worked for him, but this would make it so you don't have to double major, you can do this for your main track," Schlagheck says.
There are 150 students in the Journalism program and 260 in the Electronic Media and Film Studies program. Schlagheck expects many of the students to transition to the new major.
She says the journalism program will likely still have some interest for students that have a double major and aren't planning a career in the media industry.
