EMU Expands "You Are Welcome Here" Campaign

Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan University is expanding its "You Are Welcome Here"campaign.

Starting in 2019, the university will begin awarding a new annual scholarship to two international students that will pay for half of their tuition.

It's part of a larger effort by EMU to express support for international students and encourage more of them to come to its campus.

University spokesman Geoff Larcom says the initiative was first launched in 2016 at the insistence of EMU's President James Smith.

"This is a priority of his to increase international enrollment, and it's particularly important to do this given some of the anti-immigrant rhetoric that is coming out from our nation’s capital," says Larcom.

Larcom says EMU currently hosts more than one thousand international students from 80 different countries.
