EMU Researcher Awarded $1.5 Million Grant To Integrate GIS Applications Into Curricula

The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1.5 million grant to Eastern Michigan University's Yichun Xie to integrate geographic information systems and technology (GIS/T) mapping and analysis applications designed to strengthen abilities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Xie is the director of EMU's Institute for Geographic Information Systems and Education. The grant will go towards a partnership with the non-profit Michigan Virtual University, to bring GIS systems to nearly 5,000 students across the state. The program offers a three tier training and internship system for 8th to 12th graders to increase the speed and motivation of students toward careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. GIS is applicable to a variety of fields from urban planning and engineering to environmental studies and business.
