The Green Room: Local Access to Local Foods

Barbara Lucas

When you buy a clove of garlic or jar of honey at the chain grocery store in your town, do you ever wonder where it came from? Chances are, it was produced in China. Think about the amount of fuel, and carbon emissions,  it must take to get those items to your table.  In this month's installment of WEMU's "The Green Room",  Reporter Barbara Lucas explores access to local foods and its impact on environment and community.

To find out more about your local food system, check out Local Harvest, (http://www.localharvest.org), the Washtenaw Food Policy Council (http://washtenawfoodpolicycouncil.wordpress.com), and the Food System Economic Partnership (http://fsepmichigan.org).

Barbara received a master's degree in Environmental Policy from the University of Michigan. She began her association with WEMU in 2003 as an intern with Washtenaw County, assisting with the weekly "Issues of the Environment" show. In 2003 she also began working in documentary film, and later established her own video production company.
