LANSING - Michigan is launching its expanded Medicaid plan to provide health insurance for hundreds of thousands of low-income adults.

The state starts enrollment today for Healthy Michigan, which extends Medicaid eligibility to people making up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level.

Governor Rick Snydersays he believes the launch will go smoothly because his administration has tested the computer systems. Snyder fought to persuade fellow Republicans in the Legislature to agree to the Medicaid expansion under the contentious federal health care law.

The governor says he expects 320,000 residents to sign up in the first 12 months.

The Department of Community Healthand Department of Human Services directors will officially open enrollment at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the DHS Conner Service Center in Detroit.
