"Money Jungle: Provocative In Blue" by Terri Lynn Carrington premiered today.

Terri Lyne Carrington

In time for African American History month, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington pays tribute to three to icons of jazz and African American music:  Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Max Roach on her newest release.  In 1963, Ellington, Mingus and Roach made only one recording together: “Money Jungle” for Capitol Records.  The trio to realize the 2013 approach to “Money Jungle: Provocative In Blue” are pianist Gerald Clayton and bassist Christian McBride along with Ms. Carrington.

Terri Lyne addresses worldwide economic woes while never losing sense of her musicality.  Many pieces such as the title track include interpolation from speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama and others.  Gerald Clayton and Christian McBride react to the spoken words along Terri Lynn heightening emotional impact.  While the heart of the recording is the trio, special guests Herbie Hancock, Lizz Wright, Robin Eubanks, Tia Fuller, Antonio Hart, and Arturo Stable reinforce the attitude and integrity of the trio.

Trumpeter and scat vocalist Clark Terry is the very special guest on “Fleurette Africain”.  His “mumbles” intro and outro for this heavenly melody is surprising, humorous and refreshing.  Clark Terry is important in Terri Lyne Carrington’s musical life.  She first played with him when she was 10 years old and joined his band when she was 18.  Because Clark has been in poor health for a while, it is an added and rare treat to her a new recording featuring “CT”.

While you may be tempted to do the download route with this recording, we recommend the full package.  The photos of the session, the photo of a young Terri Lynn with mentor Max Roach, her thoughts on the original recording and ensuing contemporary project coupled with quotes from the three originators of “Money Jungle” make this a package to own and display prominently in your collection.  We are more than glad to add this one to the WEMU library and the WEMUplaylist.

Linda Yohn simply cannot remember a day in her life that was not filled with music. Her early life was full of changes as the daughter of a well-respected cancer research scientist who moved his family about, but one thing was constant: the love of music instilled by her mother. So, when it seemed life was too hard to bear, young Linda would listen to her radio, play her guitar, dance her heart out and sing at the top of her lungs. So, it isn’t so strange that “older” Linda still does all those things!
