Most fuel from spill removed from Detroit River

DETROIT (AP) — Officials say diesel fuel that spilled into the Detroit River from a U.S. Coast Guard cutter has been contained.

The Coast Guard says Monday in a release that only a residual amount of fuel remained before a boom preventing the spread of the fuel froze in the ice.

About 200 to 300 gallons spilled Feb. 4 into the river near the Ambassador Bridge while the Cutter Mackinaw was taking on fuel.

The ship's crew secured the source of the fuel and conducted initial cleanup operations onboard. Crewmembers also deployed a boom around the fuel to prevent further spread.

The Coast Guard and pollution control contractors are monitoring the site and plan to recover the boom and remaining fuel when the weather improves.

The cause of the spill remains under investigation.
