Peters Files Petitions For U.S. Senate Run

Peters files nominating petitions for US Senate

Congressman Gary Peters has filed petition signatures to put his name on the ballot. Peters is a Democrat running to succeed retiring US Senator Carl Levin. Peters' support for the federal healthcare law has been an issue in the campaign. Peters says that's OK with him.

"To me, it is a very important issue for us, is to make the sure that we have affordable, quality health care for people in the state of Michigan," he told reporters in Lansing. "The Affordable Care Act gets us in that direction where we want to go, we're making good strides. But having said that, that means we've got to continually work on an improvement."

Peters says Medicare is a program that's been tweaked and fixed incrementally over the years.

It appears former Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land will be the only Republican candidate. She opposes the federal healthcare law.
