Many Lyndon Township residents are afraid a large gravel pit and mining operation will hurt the recreation areas that bring people to western Washtenaw County. The Lyndon Township Planning Commission is holding a meeting Monday night to receive comments on a special land use permit for property on M-52 just south of North Territorial.

Township resident Mary Jane Eder fears mining 50 feet below the water table will lower the levels of nearby lakes. She's also concerned about the impacts on a nearby alkaline bog.
The city of Chelsea has very deep concerns about the proposal that would route nearly 80 gravel trains per day through Main Street on the way to I-94.

Lyndon Township Supervisor Marc Keezer doubts the planning commission will vote on the issue tonight, and he says the Township Board needs to give final approval.
McCoig Materials of Plymouth is requesting the special land use permit. Officials with McCoig Materials couldn't be reached for comment.
Monday's meeting will be held at 7 PM at the Sylvan Township Hall southwest of Chelsea on Old US-12. Lyndon Township officials moved the meeting to this location because they expect a large crowd of concerned residents.
