Soapbox Summer 2018 - Debbie Dingell

Debbie Dingell
Rep. Debbie Dingell
Debbie Dingell

Debbie Dingell is running for re-election as the Congresswoman for Michigan's 12th District.  This is the candidate's submission for the 2018 WEMU Soapbox Summer.

This is Debbie Dingell.  I am currently the Congresswoman from the 12th district of Michigan and I’m running for re-election this year.  Many of us hear that this is the most important election of a lifetime.  I think this election is one of the most important elections of all of our lifetime, no matter what generation you’re from.

When you look at how this country is being divided by hatred and by fear, we need to pull ourselves together. We need to remember what it means to be American, that united we stand, divided we fall.  There’s so many issues that we need to be talking about, and we're not focused on the issues that matter to working men and women in this country, and in this state, and in this district.

People don't want a lot, they want to be able to get a job, to earn enough money to live in a safe neighborhood, to be able to put food on the table, to be able to educate their children, and if they need to go to a doctor, to be able to afford to go to that doctor and to afford their medicine.  They want to have a safe and secure retirement. They want to know that their pension is sage

It's also important that we talk about national security.  How the us is perceived by other countries.  We are trading in an international global marketplace.  How do we make sure that we are playing on a level playing field,  protecting american workers and at the same time not having trade policies that could have unintended consequences and in some way cost us jobs?  We need to be concerned about how other countries are perceiving us.  There are so many issues that we need to care about and we need to treat each other with respect and dignity.

The tweets and the executive orders that we've been seeing this cycle are coming at a dizzying pace.  We cannot let people dismantle everything from healthcare protections, preexisting conditions, protecting our Great Lakes, the environment, the air we breathe, the water that we drink.  These are the critical issues that matter and the issues we need to be talking about.  I promise that I will work hard every single day with anyone willing to put partisan difference aside and to get the job done.

You can find more information about me, my positions, and how to talk to me anytime at debbiedingellforcongress.com.  I like meeting with people, talking with people, and I want to know what's on your mind.  My job is to be a voice for you.
