Stretch Of Ann Arbor-Saline Road To Reopen As Construction Moves To Phase Three

The major headache that is the Ann Arbor-Saline road project is about to improve some. The project isn't over, but beginning Wednesday Phase III gets underway.
And that means you'll be able to drive in both directions for the first time in months. It took two or three extra weeks but Ann Arbor and PittsfieldTownship will once more be connected by Ann Arbor Saline Road.

Phase three will look different than originally proposed. Matt MacDonellis Assistant Director of Engineering for the WashtenawCounty Road Commission. He says the initial plan was to only allow southbound traffic on Ann Arbor Saline Road over the I-94 bridge in the third phase."We were able to do more work in stage two, hence it was closed a little longer and now we're able to basically open it up to both directions," MacDonell says.

It's not all clear sailing yet, though. MacDonell says Ann Arbor-Saline Road will still be down to one-lane in each direction from I-94, south, to Oak Valley Drive. Lohr Road will also be closed at Ann Arbor-Saline using Oak Valley Drive as a detour.

Additionally all lanes on Ann Arbor-Saline Road will be open and move southbound after U of M football games, and all I-94 ramps will be open. That's a good thing, as the extended second phase of the project is pushing expected completion into early October.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
