University Of Michigan Nurses Working Towards New Contract

The contract covering registered nurses working at the University of Michigan health system has expired, but they remain on the job.  Contract talks are scheduled to resume in one week.

Officials with the University of Michigan Professional Nurse Council, which represents 6,000 registered nurses throughout the health system, say some progress has been made in contract talks but add many significant issues remain unresolved.  The contract expired midnight Saturday, and the next negotiations are scheduled to resume July 9th.

One of the issues the nurses' union is concerned about is nurse staffing, such as how many patients each nurse is assigned at one time.

The nurses will remain on the job, despite the lack of a new contract, and have scheduled an “informational" picket and community rally for July 14th.
