Veteran Detroit Broadcaster, Lisa Barry, Joins The WEMU News Team

Today we are announcing that veteran Detroit broadcaster Lisa Barry has joined the WEMU news team as the local anchor for NPR’s All Things Considered (weekdays, 4-7 p.m.).

Most recently a reporter with Detroit’s WJR-AM, Lisa Barry is a lifelong metro Detroiter with a wealth of broadcast experience.  She began her career covering the Michigan Governor’s Office and State Capitol in Lansing and continued on to stints with Detroit stations WXYT and WNIC in addition to WJR.

Lisa is a seasoned interviewer whose resume includes conversations with U.S. Presidents, celebrities, and medical professionals.  She has won numerous awards; among them the prestigious ‘Outstanding Woman in Communications,’ bestowed annually by the American Women in Radio and TV Association of Metro Detroit.

"I am grateful and excited for the opportunity to be part of such a great group of people who work for and listen to WEMU,’ said Barry. “ I have been a longtime fan of the station and have great appreciation for the community it serves. I have a personal passion for radio and feel strongly about the connection, information and entertainment local radio can provide. I look forward to being part of the growth and continued success of WEMU."

"Lisa is the consummate radio professional and a great communicator with a passion for connecting with listeners,” said WEMU Program Director, Patrick Campion. “As a longtime listener, she knows and loves the work we do at WEMU. Lisa's wealth of radio news experience and understanding of the importance of community focused public radio make her the perfect addition to our team."

Barry begins on Thursday, March 5, and is expected to be on-air the following week.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015, WEMU is a listener-support NPR affiliate with a format of local news, jazz, and blues in addition to NPR news, information, and cultural programming.  The station broadcasts to an eight county area that includes all or part of Washtenaw, Wayne, Oakland, Livingston, Jackson, Lenawee, Monroe, and Lucas (OH),  and webcasts live 24 hours a day on wemu.org and via their free mobile app for iPhone and Android.

Mary Motherwell, known as Molly, joined the WEMU staff in November of 1991 as Marketing and Development Director after stints in public relations at Domino’s Pizza International, and as an account executive first at the old Ypsilanti Press and then the former WIQB-FM. In December 2010, upon his retirement, she succeeded Arthur Timko as General Manager, only the third GM in WEMU’s 57 year history.
