Washtenaw County Arts Groups Face Serious Budget Trouble

By David Fair

Ypsilanti, MI – Arts and cultural groups in Washtenaw County and throughout the state are facing some unexpected financial difficulties.
A moratorium on state grants for the arts took effect Wednesday and will continue through at least September 30th. The move is part of Governor Granholm's executive order slicing the state's budget to resolve a huge budget deficit.
The University Musical Society is the largest grant recipient in Washtenaw County. WEMU's David Fair spoke with UMS President Ken Fisher about the moratorium's impact on his organization and other arts groups in the county. Click on the audio icon to hear the entire interview.
