The city of Ann Arbor is getting some help in selling the Library Lot property above the Library Lane underground parking garage.

City Administrator Steve Powers says CBRE is a real estate firm with experience in this sort of transaction.

"CBRE will be helping develop with city staff the engagement plan, that engagement with stakeholders, that will be a key part of the process," says Powers.

Shortly after rideshare services Uber and Lyft came to Ann Arbor the city sent the companies cease and desist letters.  Now a proposal to amend the city's taxi cab ordinance is being considered to but some teeth behind the letters.

Ann Arbor City Council is unified in concerns over Liberty Plaza but differ in their thoughts on how to move forward on improving the urban park.  Council referred a resolution to start a re-design process to the Parks Advisory Commission.

Plans for an extended stay hotel in downtown Ann Arbor should clear their last hurdle tonight.  Ann Arbor City Council will consider the site plan and development agreement for a nearly 90-thousand square foot building at Huron and Ashley.

In recent years there has been a lot of talk about the need for a downtown park above Ann Arbor's underground parking structure.  Now Ann Arbor City Council will consider a resolution to pay for a re-design of the Liberty Plaza just to the northeast of the garage.

Deer overpopulation in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County is responsible for increasing home and vehicle property damage and is threatening the area's ecological balance.

The eventual sale of Ann Arbor's Library Lot should help boost the city's stock of affordable housing. That's because City Council has promised 50 percent of the proceeds will go towards the affordable housing fund.

Since January the city of Ann Arbor has been receiving invoices from the Humane Society of Huron Valley for animal control services.  City Council member Jane Lumm says the city doesn't have a dedicated funding source to cover the full cost, but made a step in the right direction with an amendment in next year's budget.

Ann Arbor's efforts to reduce carbon emissions through the climate action plan received a boost in next year's budget.  Council amended the $98 million general fund budget to include $125,000 for advocacy and education programs around reducing energy use.

Ann Arbor City Council has approved a new hiring policy removing references to past felony convictions from most employment applications for city jobs. 

The Ann Arbor News reports exceptions to the change approved unanimously Monday night are for police and fire department applicants.

Ann Arbor plans to consider efforts to control the city's deer population that could include killing some of the animals or sterilization.  The Ann Arbor News reports City Council voted Monday night to direct the city administrator to evaluate Ann Arbor's options and report back by the end of July.

Northeast Ann Arbor residents have raised concerns about the deer population for some time, but council member Jane Lumm says the issue seems to have really spiked in the last couple of years.  City Council Monday night will consider a resolution to have the city partner with a variety of other organizations to develop a deer management plan.  


Ann Arbor Eyeing Backlog Of Tree Maintenance

Ann Arbor City Administrator Steve Powers is suggesting city council approve $1 million to attack a backlog of tree pruning and maintenance in his 2014-15 fiscal year budget.

Powers says high-priority tree pruning would be done with the funding, along with dead tree and stump removal.

Powers says the funding will help "to maintain Ann Arbor Tree City's urban forest, and to reduce risks to public safety."

The city of Ann Arbor is moving ahead with plans for a 12-thousand square foot park on the Library Lot, and one city council member wants to know what the community's envisions there.

Sabra Briere is conducting an online survey.  She says those who get her regular email updates will find the link in her message going out the first weekend in May.

"I'll also post the survey results, and the raw data, on my website," Briere says, "which is www.SabraBriere.org."

The 4 Ann Arbor City Council members seeking Mayor John Hieftje's job will participate in a forum in his Ford School of Public Policy class Wednesday.  The forum set to begin at 1 in the afternoon in Weill Hall will be open to the public.   Hieftje says he doesn't know exactly what the students will be asking Sabra Briere, Sally Hart Petersen, Stephen Kunselman, and Christopher Taylor.

Members of the Library Green Conservancy are hopeful Ann Arbor City Council actions will help people work together to develop a park above the city’s underground parking structure.  Last month council approved 65-hundred to 12-thousand square feet to be used as a park, but that’s now been revised to approximately 12-thousand square feet.

Ann Arbor City Council is set to ask state officials to drop appeals to the court ruling that briefly allowed same-sex marriages to take place.  Council tonight will consider a resolution urging Governor Rick Snyder and Attorney General Bill Schuette to suspend efforts to contest Judge Bernard Friedman’s ruling.

While most attention was being paid to President Barack Obama visiting Ann Arbor Wednesday, an important sale was completed.  Dennis Dahlmann the owner of the Campus Inn and the Bell Tower Hotel completed the purchase of the former Y-M-C-A lot on South Fifth Avenue.

The potential number of contested Ann Arbor City Council primaries continues to grow.  While only incumbent first ward city council member Sumi Kailasapathy is officially set to appear on the August Democratic Primary ballot now, eight other people have pulled petitions.

Ann Arbor City Council has approved using between 6500 square feet to 12,000 square feet of the land above the underground parking structure for an urban park.

Ann Arbor will use general fund money to help the public art program transition to a new funding model, but over $940,000 in old percent for art funds are being returned to their original sources.  That’s the result of three resolutions passed by city council Monday night to hopefully end the long debate over the program.
