As parents get ready to send children back to school, health officials are calling for kids to get appropriate vaccinations.  The request comes at a time when more Washtenaw County parents opt out of vaccinations than other counties in the state.

Washtenaw County Public Health Immunizations Coordinator Chris Karpinski says vaccines are a safe easy way to prevent illness from spreading.

Ann Arbor and Whitmore Lake Public Schools voters will decide in November if annexation plans should go forward.  If they do it will be the second time a pair of Washtenaw Intermediate School Districts have merged in the last few years.

If annexation is approved, a combined Ann Arbor and Whitmore Lake School district would become the 4th largest in the state.  Just over a month ago, the Ann Arbor and Whitmore Lake School Boards held a joint meeting to start talks about possible annexation.  We'll likely know after a meeting Wednesday night at Ann Arbor's Pioneer High School if a plan will be put before voters this fall to move forward with combining the districts.

In lieu of state funds, Ann Arbor Public Schools will charge almost $15,000 tuition for some non-residents. The school board approved the maximum tuition the state allows for students that missed schools of choice enrollment or aren't eligible.

Ann Arbor Public Schools could gain more than just Whitmore Lake's approximately 1,000 students if annexation plans move forward.  That's because Whitmore Lake Public Schools currently accepts schools of choice students from Livingston County.

Whitmore Lake Public Schools has a small fund balance and only plans to open two buildings in the fall, which could make the district ripe for  state take-over.  A possible alternative now being studied is annexation by Ann Arbor Public Schools.

Ann Arbor teachers still hope to find solutions to the district's budget that won't leave last year's wage concession in place.  The district has set a deadline of next Monday to have an agreement in place or the entire contract will be terminated at the end of the month.

The Ann Arbor School Board has taken steps towards completing next year's budget, but chose not to vote on the plan Wednesday night.  The delay is designed to give more time to adjust spending based on the state's new K-12 funding model.

The Ann Arbor School Board was set to vote on a balanced budget tonight, but the latest proposal for state funding would leave a big hole to fill.

A House Senate committee's proposal would give the district $2.5 million less than Governor Rick Snyder's plan.

Superintendent Jeanice Swift indicated the board will likely still vote on the original budget tonight.

Custodians with Ann Arbor schools are considering forming a worker-owned cooperative as part of an effort to keep their jobs if their work is outsourced by the district.    The custodians' union AFSCME Local 1128 voted Saturday to pursue forming the cooperative. The Ann Arbor News reports  the district could contract with the co-op for custodial work without paying into the state retirement system for school employees.

"I thought then maybe I could invent something to clean the ocean," Hu says, "and let the sea animals live happily in the water."
