It's said music has healing powers, and, later this month, the Ypsilanti Community Schools is having a special event intended to both entertain and improve the health of the community.

We spoke with YCS superintendent Dr. Benjamin Edmondson and Dr. Wanda Whitten-Shurney, CEO and Medical Director of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America/Michigan Chapter, about the upcoming "Jazz in the Parking Lot" event.

As schools and the education system continue to evolve, what’s being taught in the classroom has come a long way from just reading, writing and arithmetic.

We visited a local high school where students can make use of “The Learning Studio,” where an Ypsilanti photographer is combining community experience with public education, creating new opportunities for students.

One of the issues on the ballot early next month in Washtenaw County will be a proposal to renew and restore the Non-Homestead Operating Millage for Ypsilanti Community Schools.

Lisa Barry reports, with the future of the city hinging on the success of its schools, opposition to the ballot proposal is difficult to find.

School is out for most of Michigan, but many local school officials are still hard at work determining what's next for their district.

For some, that means looking for ways to improve the bottom line.
