Today is your last day to register to vote in the August 7th Primary Election.  There is plenty of election -related activity going on this week and som other items of community interest and engagement, too.  Get all the details in this week's 'Civic Matters' with WEMU's David Fair and Mary Morgan, the executive director of the CivCity Initiative.

The 4th of July falls on Wednesday of this week and there are parades, fireworks, and other celebrations of note in Washtenaw County.  That's only part of the conversation between WEMU's David Fair and the CivCityInitiative's Mary Morgan on this edition of "Civic Matters!"

There were no surprises in the Ann Arbor city council races. 


There are a few issues on the agenda for tonight's Ann Arbor city council meeting.

 Ypsilanti City Council members will take a step forward tonight in creating a Neighborhood Economic Zone, or NEZ, in the city.

Voters have sent Incumbent Ann Arbor City Councilman Stephen Kunselman to defeat.

Voters in Ann Arbor's 5th Ward have decided to send Chip Smith  to city council. Smith beat the incumbent, Mike Anglin by more than 300 votes.

It's another two year term representing the 1st Ward on Ann Arbor City Council   for Sabra Briere.

An Ann Arbor City Council member plans to introduce a resolution to create a conflict of interest policy for council members at their next meeting.

Lengthy public hearings on a proposed apartment complex development at 413 East Huron have prevented Ann Arbor City Council from taking action on the matter. As WEMU's Andrew Cluley reports, for a second meeting in a row, council last night halted its session prior to finishing up the nights agenda.

ANN ARBOR CITY COUNCIL WILL BE GETTING THREE NEW FACES AS A RESULT OF YESTERDAY'S PRIMARY ELECTIONS. 

IN ANN ARBOR'S FIRST WARD SUMI KAILASAPATHY  DEFEATED ERIC STURGIS WITH 58 PERCENT OF THE VOTE.

SECOND WARD INCUMBENT TONY DEREZINSKI FELL TO SALLY HART PETERSEN, 55 PERCENT TO 45 PERCENT.

THE FIFTH WARD SAW CHUCK WARPEHOSKI CLAIM 56 PERCENT OF THE VOTE OVER VIVIENNE ARMENTROUT.  WARPEHOSKI WILL FACE  REPUBLICAN STUART BERRY IN THE NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION.

Primary election day is less than a week away. In Ann Arbor's 2nd Ward, voters will choose between Incumbent Tony Derezinksi  and his challenger, Sally Hart Peterson. WEMU's Andrew Cluley has a look at the Democratic candidates.

The Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners have signed off on a four-party agreement and Articles of Incorporation that will serve as the framework for a new, county-wide transit authority.  Even with that step forward, another action was taken that will takes the process a step backward.
