Last winter's harsh weather left many states with limited natural gas supplies.  While Michigan wasn't among them, DTE Energy says it's planning a new pipeline to ensure a Michigan never runs short of natural gas.  It's called the Nexus Pipeline and will track right through Washtenaw County.

By the end of next week the conversion of some 1,675 old sodium-vapor and mercury-vapor street lights in Ypsilanti to LED's should be complete.  Not only will the conversion make city streets brighter and safer, it will also save the city about $120,000 a year.

That's according to City Manager Ralph Lange, who says DTE Energy has 119 post-top lights left to convert.

Lange says the conversion project cost less than $600,000.

In 2008 Michigan lawmakers approved a requirement for 10 percent of the state's power to come from renewable sources by the end of 2015. Utilities are on pace to likely hit that target, but it's unclear what the state's energy policy will be going forward.  A bipartisan group of lawmakers hope the upcoming energy policy discussion will led to fewer barriers for individuals and small groups to produce and sell green power.

After years of industrial contamination and economic stagnation, things may be turning around in Ann Arbor’s Lower Town, thanks to a new recreational feature in the Huron River, and the soon-to-be-announced DTE proposal to develop the Mich-Con property across the river.  Community responses are mixed, ranging from cautious optimism to elation.

About 6,000 DTE Energy customers in Washtenaw County are without electricity this evening.

High winds that accompanied our afternoon thunderstorms brought trees and utility lines down across the area.

DTE Energy did not have an estimate as to when the electricity might be restored, but suggested the number of customers without power might go up before it goes down.

The City of Ann Arbor wants to help provide some energy relief to rental property owners.

They are teaming up with DTE's Multi-Family Program on a pilot program that offers free upgrades like compact flourescent light bulbs, water-saving shower heads and programmable thermostats.

Heidi Muir, the principal program advisor, says they usually focus on rental properties with five or more units.

This effort targets smaller properties.

"We will accept multi-family properties with two to five units under one contiguous roof," Muir says.

The long and harsh winter has yet another early spring implication. DTE Energy will have to conduct weekend meter readings, in addition to the regularly scheduled weekday visits to your residence.

DTE has hired the company Olameter to conduct the weekend readings. Beginning tomorrow, the readers will be deployed to all portions of the utility's service region. they will be out reading meters every Saturday and Sunday through April 12th. DTE employees will continue to conduct the weekday readings.

DTE Energy says it's ready if high winds tear through it's service area tonight. A High Wind Watch is in effect from this evening through end of afternoon Friday. Gusts could reach, or exceed, 50-miles per hour.  That kind of wind can break tree branches and knock down power lines. So, what is the utility doing to get ready? This is DTE Spokesperson Erica Donerson.

Additionally, Donerson advises you prepare an emergency kit in case you lose power. She says it should include a battery-powered radio, batteries, water, non-perishable food items and a first-aid kit.

Bald Eagles call Monroe Power Plant Home

Feb 19, 2014

Close to 200 bald eagles have made D-T-E Energy's Monroe power plant home for the winter.   Utility spokesperson Randy Barret says the property makes for a great nesting area, with shelter from the elements, seclusion and plenty of fishing. Barret says up to 180 bald eagles have been counted at the plant on Lake Erie, which has a warm-water discharge that prevents ice from forming and gives the eagles a prime spot for catching fish.

Update: Power Outage in SE Michigan

Nov 19, 2013

Update: 6 a.m., DTE Energy has restored 252,000 customers who lost power following severe thunderstorms and strong winds that blew across the region Sunday. Approximately 50,000 customers remain without power. Some 302,000 customers were affected by power outages since the strong winds began Sunday afternoon. About 90% of customers are expected to have their power restored by late tonight.

A little rain might be the least of your worries during trick-or-treating this evening.

DTE Energy warns of the potential for high winds, and suggests people who will be out trick-or-treating this evening get their goodie-grabbing done earlier rather than later, when winds will pick up.

High winds can lead to downed power lines.

DTE spokesperson Erica Donerson  says if you come across a downed power line, stay away from it.

She says if the winds become strong in your area, it may be better to stay inside rather than risk coming across a downed power line.

The city of Ypsilanti has made the first cut in the effort to be home to a four million dollar DTE Energy solar array.

City Council on Tuesday is expected to approve a lease and easement for the project, part of the next phase in the selection process.

DTE Energy is looking for a place to install a one-point-three megawatt solar array, and the city has proposed locating the array on four-and-a-half acres of land that once served as a landfill, north of I-94 and east of Huron Street.
