Slater To Attend Weekend Transportation Conference At EMU

On Saturday, August 30, 2014, The Conference Of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO), together with former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation and Eastern Michigan graduate Rodney Slater, and Eastern Michigan University, will hold a Transportation Leadership Forum.

EMU Resident Assistants Get Fire Safety Training

Most college students will be back in the classroom next week, and many have been moving into their dorm rooms over the last few days.  Even before that, the Resident Assistants who'll be watching over students in  Eastern Michigan University's dorms were on campus, getting ready.  Part of the preparation involved fire safety training, and the Ypsilanti Fire Department was on campus Thursday to help with that.

As students return to Eastern Michigan University, they may notice some of the safety enhancements the school has put in place.  Other enhancements won't be so obvious.

 

EMU spokesperson Geoff Larcom says one of the more visible items is improved lighting in the campus perimeter area.

As colleges prepare for a new school year one of the first lessons taught will focus on sexual assualt education. Eastern Michigan University officials want the entire campus community to work together to prevent sexual violence.

State Representative David Rutledge has formally introduced a collaborative effort to address public safety, an effort at least partially in response to a rash of crimes on Washtenaw County's east side, including the killing of Eastern Michigan University student athlete Demarius Reed,

A 23 year-old Eastern Michigan University student is running across the country for charity.

Zachary James is trying to raise $15,000 for Compassion International by running from New York City to San Francisco.

He intends to run 33 miles a day, all while pushing a modified stroller containing food, water and other supplies.

James has spent the last two years training daily in preparation for his run.

DSO Helps Pease Auditorium Mark 100th Anniversary

The 100th anniversary celebration for Pease Auditorium reaches its crecendo with Friday night's concert featuring the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra was one of the first acts to take the stage at Pease Auditorium, and the DSO returns Friday night at 8 to help mark the facility's 100th anniversary.

Kiwanis Club Helps Teens In Foster Care

A program that helps teens in foster care and other students make up high school credit will be able to proceed this summer thanks to a grant of $2,500 from the Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor to the Student Advocacy Center of Michigan.

The program offers online credit recovery classes taught by two teachers and also includes transportation and snacks. Six students involved in the foster care system and six academically struggling students have signed up.

Gray Turf Coming To EMU's Rynearson Stadium

Eastern Michigan University is taking a page out of Boise State's playbook and will play its home football games on a field featuring a unique color scheme.

A state-of-the-art  gray-colored FieldTurf playing surface will be ready for the Eagle's season-opening home game against Morgan State. 

EMU Athletic Director Heather Lyke says the new turf is being paid for with money Eastern gets from host schools.

Weather Decent For Viewing 'Super Moon'

The weather looks like it will cooperate and give us a decent view of tonight's "Super Moon".

Norbert Vance is director of Eastern Michigan University's Sherzer Observatory. 

He says that as the summer solstice approaches, the moon is at its lowest point on the horizon, "Which gives it the illusion of riding low and mysteriously colored orange in that southern sky."

And being a full moon, it'll appear huge tonight.  But Vance says you can take measurements and see that tonight's moon is no larger than the moon as it appears other nights high in the sky.

EMU Discusses 2015 Budget At Forum

Eastern Michigan University's recently approved $301.9 million fiscal year 2015 spending plan was the subject of a late morning forum.

Chief Financial Officer John Lumm says the budget is fiscally responsible, and will help EMU continue to improve its overall financial position. 

Included in the budget is a tuition increase of 3.2 percent - the maximum allowed by the state for schools wishing to receive funding. 

EMU is also making $4.6 million more in financial aid available, and budgeted for safety enhancements like the hiring of 10 new public safety officers.

Eastern Michigan University is increasing funding for public safety and financial aid next school year.  The board of regents today approved a $301.9 million general fund budget.

The combination of an aging population and retiring doctors is creating a shortage of primary care physicians.  Eastern Michigan University and Saint Joseph Mercy Health System are teaming up on a new Physician Assistant program that will help address the problem.

The trial date for two Detroit men accused of killing EMU football player Demarius Reed last fall has been pushed back a month.

The trial of Ed Thomas and Kristopher Pratt had been set to start June 23rd, but it's been re-scheduled for July 21st. 

Since Reed's death at his off-campus apartment complex, EMU has been working to improve safety in near-campus areas. 

The university is hiring 10 new police officers, has expanded patrols into neighborhoods surrounding the campus, and has worked with local apartment complexes to boost security.

Two Detroit men face pre-trial hearings in the robbery and fatal shooting of Eastern Michigan University football player Demarius Reed.    The hearings are scheduled this afternoon for Kristopher Pratt and Ed Thomas in Washtenaw County Trial Court in Ann Arbor.

Eastern Michigan University's student athletes recorded the second-highest average grade point average in school history during the winter 2014 semester.

With a 3.145 GPA, the Eagles also topped the 3.0 mark for the ninth straight semester. 

Of EMU's 21 athletic teams, 15 had average GPA's of 3.0 or better, and 36 student athletes scored 4.0 GPA's.

Eastern Michigan University's Children's Institute is launching its first ever summer Great Start Readiness program thanks to a $50,000 grant from Michigan's Department of Education.

The nine week-long program prepares preschoolers for the upcoming school year.

Institute director Chris Finch says early education plays a vital role in ensuring children are prepared for a school setting.
