EMU Students Scoff at Friday the 13th

Most Eastern Michigan University students don't seem to mind that today is Friday the 13th.  WEMU's Bob Eccles has more.


Eastern Michigan University professor Phillip Arrington's novel "The Serpent's Sage" has been released through Smashwords and Amazon.com. WEMU's Bob Eccles spoke with Dr. Arrington about is novel, and his decision to take the self-publishing route with it.

Eastern Michigan University marked the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s March on Washington with bells and playing King's historic speech at three o'clock, when the speech was originally given. 

Over 100 people attended the ceremony and listened to comments from EMU professor Ronald Woods and state representative David Rutledge.  Rutledge says there are things King would find utterly amazing if he was here today.

More Advising Options For EMU Students

Eastern Michigan University students have a new place to turn for a wide variety of advising issues.  WEMU's Andrew Cluley has more in the new advising center, funded thanks to a donation from a member of the Board of Regents.

  An Eastern Michigan University professor is undertaking a 450-mile cycling trip starting June 29 in order to raise $4000 dollars to support Study Abroad programs at Eastern.

Even more amazing, he will making the 12-day journey at age 70, something many people in their 70's could not undertake.

John Fike is a part time lecturer in Eastern's political science department. He says Study Abroad programs are important because students who go to other countries to study come back more mature, more focused, and more rounded in their understanding of the world.

  Full time undergraduate students at Eastern Michigan University will spend about $340 more in tuition and fees next school year. 

The board of regents today approved a 3.75 percent increase in tuition and fees.

New York Times  columnist Joe Nocera spoke Tuesday afternoon at the Eastern Michigan University Student Center auditorium. The death of Eastern Michigan University student Julia Niswender has been ruled a homicide.  That's according to final autopsy results from the Washtenaw County Medical Examiner's office, which says toxicology results did not yield any conclusive information.  Niswender was found dead in her off-campus apartment December 11th.  A suspect has not been identified, but a press release indicates that Ypsilanti Police, State Police and Federal agencies "continue to utilize all available tools and investigate all possible sources of information" regarding the case.  Anyone with information that c

Investigators say they're still waiting for toxicology results, forensic laboratory analysis and a final autopsy report as they continue their investigation into the death of Eastern Michigan University junior Julia Niswender.  Niswender was found dead in her off-campus apartment about a month ago.  Her death is being investigated as a homicide.  Police say they continue to "investigate and interview a number of subjects", and are working closely with Niswender's family.  Anyone with information that could be useful to investigators is urged to call Detective Sgt.

The investigation into how 23 yerar-old Julia Niswender died continues, as the Eastern Michigan University student is laid to rest.  A funeral service was held today for Niswender, who was found dead in her off-campus apartment last Tuesday night.  Ypsilanti police spent the weekend talking to people in the area surrounding the Peninsular Place apartments, trying to find out if anyone saw or heard anything that might be helpful to the investigation.  Niswender's death is being investigated as a possible homicide, although the cause of her death has not yet been determined.

About 200 people attended a candlelight vigil Friday night at the Lakehouse at Eastern Michigan University for Julia Niswender, the EMU junior found dead in her off-campus apartment Tuesday night.  Friends and family took turns speaking about the 23 year-old and what they'll miss most about her. 

Ypsilanti police are investigating Niswender's death as a "possible homicide".  Preliminary autopsy results were inconclusive and more tests will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Candelight Vigil Planned For Julia Niswender

EMU Students and friends of Julia Niswender will hold a candle-light vigil in her memory Friday night.  The vigil will take place at the Lakehouse, near the Student Center on the EMU campus.  It's scheduled to start at eight-thirty Friday night, and participants are asked to bring their own candles.  A fund has also been established to help Niswender's family with expenses.  Donations to the Julia Niswender Fund will be accepted Friday night.

Preliminary autopsy results for 23 year-old Julia Niswender are back, but they don't shed much light on how the Eastern Michigan University junior died.  Ypsilanti police say the cause of death is listed as "pending".  Toxicology results will take another two or three weeks.  Investigators say there were no outward signs of trauma to Niswender's body, but there were indications of "possible foul play".  Niswender's body was discovered Tuesday night in her off-campus apartment in the 1000 block of Huron River Drive.  Her death is being treated as a possible homicide.
