Ann Arbor's skatepark took years of planning and fundraising to become a reality.  Almost four months after opening, city officials and skateboarders agree it was worth the effort.

Years of planning and fundraising will be worth it for area skaters as they celebrate the grand opening of Ann Arbor's new skatepark tomorrow.  The event will include a demonstration by skating legend Tony Hawk and other professional skaters at 4 PM.

The grand-opening of Ann Arbor's new skatepark is a month away, but news that skating legend Tony Hawk will be at the opening has the skating community freaking out.  President of the Friends of the Ann Arbor Skatepark Trevor Staples says Hawk and several other professional skateboarders will give demonstrations as part of the opening event.

Ann Arbor officials expect to have the construction schedule for the rest of the new skatepark set within the next week.  Park Planner Amy Kuras thinks the facility will be completed by the scheduled June 21st grand opening unless there are a lot of weather issues.

Kuras says most of the remaining work is in two areas.

It's still a little over two months before the opening day for the new skatepark in Ann Arbor, but interest in skating already seems to be growing.  The skatepark's grand opening is set for June 21st, which is International Go Skating Day.

By this time next year, a new skate-park should be open in Ann Arbor's Veterans Memorial Park. As WEMU's Andrew Cluley reports, City Council last night approved a construction contract in excess of one-million dollars.
