89.1 WEMU

Giving Tuesday

Last January we began a yearlong celebration of 40 years of broadcasting jazz on 89.1.  And what a year it's been. We celebrated with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and at the Detroit Music Awards with a distinguished service award. With Laith Al Saadi at our Blues Barbecue and onstage at the Detroit Jazz Festival with a special tribute.  And even with a halftime show by the EMU Marching Band.

There is plenty going on in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County this week. WEMU's David Fair and CivCity Initiaitive executive director, Mary Morgan, cover it for you in this week's edition of "Civic Matters."

There is a lot going on in the week ahead. Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Shop Local Saturday, Cyber Monday and, on November 28th, Giving Tuesday.  WEMU's David Fair discusses the difference philanthropy and participation in these events can make to the area with Deb Polich, President and CEO of The Arts Alliance.

EMU Celebrates 'Giving Tuesday' Success

Dec 9, 2013

Eastern Michigan University says its Giving Tuesday fundraising effort was a resounding success.

Tom Stevick is EMU's Vice-President for Advancement, and Executive Director of the EMU Foundation.  He says the university's first one-day fundraising event exceeded expectations.

Stevick says they were expecting to raise around $50,000 or $60,000, but ended up with more than $138,000.

Money raised by EMU on Giving Tuesday will go to various scholarships and campus programs, plus the school's new Student Emergency Fund.
