Perhaps you’re familiar with a wine sommelier.  At most of your finer eateries, you’ll find one who can assist in selecting the best wine pairing for your meal.  These are highly trained people who have become experts in all things wine.  But, we’re betting many of you have never heard of a tea sommelier?  While rare in the United States, they do exist, and, as a matter of fact, one such person is running a successful business in Ann Arbor’s Kerrytown District.  89.1 WEMU’s Jorge Avellan introduces you to a certified tea sommelier, who has been publicly drafting tasty brews, while “Hidden in Plain Sight!”

You don’t have to travel halfway around the world to see historic artifacts from the ancient world.  Treasures have been procured from around the globe and are available for you to see, right in Ann Arbor. Where?  It’s a museum on the University of Michigan campus.

You’ll find it clearly visible on State Street, and yet for many, it’s hidden in plain sight.

Whether you are looking for something new or used, there are lot of shopping options these days.  But one place you may have not known about for a wide variety of used items for sale is “property disposition” on the University of Michigan’s campus.

89.1 WEMU’S Lisa Barry visited the giant warehouse with lots of interesting used items for sale… hidden in plain sight.

Ann Arbor Distillery Company

Perhaps you've seen the Arbor and Fox River brands on the local liquor store shelves.  They are brands of Vodka, gin and bourbon that have a worldly taste, but a hometown heritage.  You see, these spirits are produced and distributed from a facility right in Ann Arbor.  As 89.1 WEMU's Jorge Avellan reports, the Ann Arbor Distilling Company is another local treasure practically hidden in plain sight.

The Ann Arbor area is often noted for academia and art, football, and food, but did you know it’s also home to a tortilla factory?

Mary Terese Fleszar was last seen alive the evening of July 9, 1967.  Her body was found on an abandoned farm in Superior Township just about one month later.  Investigators didn’t know it then, but this was the beginning of a series of murders attributed to John Norman Collins.  These horrific acts of violence held our community in terror until Collins’ arrest in July 1969.  On this week’s "Hidden in Plain Sight," WEMU’s Patrick Campion meets up with “Terror in Ypsilanti” author Gregory Fournier to take us on a tour of some of the sites and sounds associated with the “Michigan Murderer” who preyed on Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti co-eds for two years.

Being a mom is hard, regardless of who you are or what your background may be.  It’s even harder for those who may not have the support they need.

In our ongoing series “Hidden in Plain Sight,” 89.1 WEMU’S Lisa Barry takes you to the Corner Health Center in Ypsilanti--a comprehensive teen health center, also providing special care and programs for young mothers.

There is no doubt that Washtenaw County has many historic and beautiful buildings.  But have you ever wondered who helps keep those structures looking the way they do?  As part of our "Hidden in Plain Sight" series, 89.1 WEMU's Jorge Avellan interviewed workers who do just that.

On this edition of 89.1 WEMU’S "Hidden In Plain Sight," our own Lisa Barry takes you to a west side Ann Arbor shoe store that first opened downtown in 1942.  Mast Shoes has been providing a lot of sole/soul and sense of community for decades and is, ultimately, about more than just shoes.

In our daily drives this time of year, we frequently encounter cyclists on the paths and roadways around town.  More often than not, we continue on our journey without another thought about the person we see riding to points unknown.  Sometimes, there is a more going on than meets the eye. In this installment of WEMU’s “Hidden in Plain Sight" series, Jorge Avellan takes you inside a program that is helping those with disabilities pedal to greater independence.

We’ve created a new feature here on 89.1 WEMU we’re calling “Hidden In Plain Sight.”  It focuses on some of the people or places in our community that you may not have known about or were familiar with.

89.1 WEMU’S Lisa Barry takes you to a secret garden that you may actually have eaten from – but perhaps didn’t know even existed!
