Michigan Theater Executive Director Russ Collins is attending the Traverse City Film Festival this week. 

So, WEMU's David Fair instead spoke with Michigan Theater Program Director Amanda Bynum. The conversation, of course, began with a look at Russ's trip to Traverse City.

As is the case every Thursday morning, WEMU's David Fair was joined today by Michigan Theater Executive Director Russ Collins for a little movie talk.

In this week's installment of "Cinema Chat", Dave and Russ chatted about some news out of Hollywood,  and a long list of movies that are available for your viewing pleasure in the days ahead!

In this week's installment of Cinema Chat, Michigan Theater Program Director Amanda Bynum sat in for her boss, Russ Collins.  She came to the studio with an abundance of information, and joined WEMU's David Fair in enthusiastically good spirits!

Today, was certainly no exception, as David welcomed Russ Collins back to the studio!

   In this holiday edition of Cinema Chat, WEMU's David Fair and Michigan Theater Director Russ Collins discuss movies available over the Independence  Day holiday weekend.  Find out what kind of reviews "The Lone Ranger" is getting, and whether or not the animated "Despicable Me 2" holds up to the original. First, Russ offers up some news out of Hollywood on pending films based on two literary classics!

In this week's installment of Cinema chat, WEMU's Daiv Fair and Russ Collins discuss some Hollywood news, including Channing Tatum possibly directing his first film. it would be the sequel to "Magic Mike."  An update of Cinderella is in the works. Dave and Russ also cover a number of movies opening this weekend including Joss Whedon's adaptation of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing"  and the action-thriller "White House Down."

Michigan Theater Executive Director Russ Collins paid his weekly visit with David Fair for this week's installment of Cinema Chat, and began the conversation discussing the return of one of the University of Michigan's most successful exports to Hollywood.

The 2nd annual Cinetopia Film Festival kicked off in Ann Arbor Thursday night and will run right through the weekend. With so much to cover, a second installment of Cinema Chat this week seemed appropriate and needed! In this bonus edition, WEMU's David Fair is joined by Michigan Theater Executive Director Russ Collins and Michigan Theater Program Director Amanda Bynum. Additionally, there is a special appearance by Richmond Arquette! Richmond is the co-star of the film, "This is Martin Bonner."  The film will be shown twice at Cinetopia, the first of which is 9:30 tonight.

It’s Here!  Cinetopia 2013

45 films (including two free films at a Rooftop Theater on top of the Maynard Street Parking Structure) will be shown.  Over 30 filmmakers are in town – directors, cinematographers, producers and stars. And Cinetopia will take place in both Ann Arbor and Detroit.

"Love and Honor", a movie with many connections to the Ann Arbor community, opens Friday at the Michigan Theater.

The movie marks the directorial debut of Danny Mooney, an Ann Arbor actor and filmmaker who graduated from Pioneer High School and the University of Michigan.

Much of the film was shot in Ann Arbor.  It tells the story of a soldier who gets a "Dear John" letter while serving in Vietnam.  He and his buddy decide to travel halfway around the world to return to Ann Arbor in the hopes of changing the girl's mind.

Cinetopia International Film Festival at the Michigan Theater

New movies and a Cinetopia wrap-up.

More than 30 films were screened over four days at Cinetopia. They were some of the brightest and the best of contemporary films playing the international festival circuit. Films were screened in the Michigan Theater’s historic auditorium, the State Theater and the University of Michigan’s Angell Hall; additional special 3D lecture was presented at the main branch of the Ann Arbor District Library.
