In the not-so-distant future, Pittsfield Township Hall may be entirely powered by solar energy, with a center that also serves as a community gathering place and educational opportunity. In this week's installment of 'Issues of the Environment', David Fair talks with Pittsfield Township Supervisor Mandy Grewal.

Connecting Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Washtenaw Avenue is the busiest street in the county.  An effort to give this corridor a more pedestrian friendly make-over is now five years old.  Most of the progress made so far is only on paper, but is expected to produce long term results.

Pittsfield Township was thinking about banning charcoal grills from apartment porches and decks before a July 4th fire that damaged several units of an apartment building, but now propane-fired grills may also be a no-no.

Public Safety Director Matt Harshberger says that pending township approval, language will be added to the open burn ordinance prohibiting charcoal grills or grills fired by an open flame from use in multi-family housing.

The issue may come up for a vote at the township board's meeting in August.

Storms that rolled through Washtenaw County knocked out power to several thousand DTE Energy customers Wednesday afternoon.

The utility's outage map shows three main affected areas:

  • Dexter Township area:  500-1500 customers without electricity.
  • Webster Township area:  100-500 customers affected.
  • Southern edge of Ann Arbor into Pittsfield Township:  1500-2500 customers in the dark.

Numerous smaller scattered outages have also been reported.

The final ReImagine Washtenaw Report outlines changes designed to make the five-mile stretch of Washtenaw Avenue between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti more transit-centered and bike and pedestrian friendly.

The plan calls for improvements such as large center medians and buffered bike lanes.

Communities along the corridor are expected to soon begin making some of the smaller changes outlined in the plan, like connecting sections of sidewalk that currently have gaps between them.

The road construction project on Ann Arbor-Saline between Eisenhower and Oak Valley Drive that was expected to start next week won’t get going for another couple of weeks or so because the ground remains frozen.

Potholes line roads throughout the area, but one particularly rough stretch will be the site of major improvements.   Construction starts at the end of the month on the stretch of Ann Arbor Saline Road near I-94.

The Pittsfield Township Fire Department conducted a training fire at an old building on Ellsworth this afternoon.

The man accused of shooting at the driver of a front end loader who was clearing snow in Pittsfield Township is now facing charges including assault with intent to murder.

Bevan Wilson was being held in the Washtenaw County jail on $45,000 cash bond.  He's accused of firing a handgun at the driver of a front end loader who was clearing snow from the parking lot at the Valley Ranch Apartments Tuesday morning.

The wind shield of the vehicle was damaged, but the driver was not injured.

ReImagine Washtenaw Right-of-Way Plan Presented

Dec 11, 2013
Bob Eccles

ReImagine Washtenaw presented its right-of-way plan to the public at a meeting Tuesday night.

The plan covers the corridor from the water tower in Ypsilanti to the Washtenaw-Stadium split in Ann Arbor.

Ypsilanti city council member Pete Murdock says the city is dealing with a lot of traffic issues as part of its master plan revision, and those will have to be coordinated with ReImagine Washtenaw.

The ReImagine Washtenaw right-of-way plan includes improvements such as refuge islands to help pedestrians safely cross the street, buffered bike lanes, and eight "super stops" for Ann Arbor Area Transportation busses along the corridor.

The next step in the implementation process is to have municipalities along the corridor adopt the plan.

Wednesday night is your chance to take a look at improvements being recommended as part of the ReImagine Washtenaw project and have some input on the issue.

Nathan Voght is project manager for ReImagine Washtenaw.  He says they've been working with a consultant on the right-of-way study being presented at a public meeting Wednesday night.

The study addresses issues such as bike lanes, sidewalks and safer ways to cross Washtenaw Avenue from the Ypsilanti water tower to the Stadium Boulevard split.

Find out more about the plan from 6:30 to 8 Wednesday night  in conference room "A" in the County Service Center Learning Resources Center off Washtenaw Avenue.

Pittsfield Township fire fighters this week are training for a scenario they hope they'll never encounter in real life - the crash of a small plane at Ann Arbor Municipal Airport. WEMU's Bob Eccles tagged along.

Motorists in the Ann Arbor/Pittsfield Township should prepare for some new traffic delays as a new road construction project gets underway. As WEMU's Andrew Cluley reports, work on a new roundabout at the intersection of State Street and Ellsworth Road will get underway in June.
