This is Arson Awareness Week in Michigan. Gov. Rick Snyder says he wants to focus public attention on vehicle arson and the importance of preventing such behavior through a collaborative statewide effort.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is offering $250,000 in grants to help communities develop recycling programs. Governor Rick Snyder announced a plan this week to boost the state's residential recycling rate.  Among the proposals is producing more information about local recycling options. The funding from the Community Pollution Prevention Grant Program will help local leaders do that.

Ann Arbor City Council is set to ask state officials to drop appeals to the court ruling that briefly allowed same-sex marriages to take place.  Council tonight will consider a resolution urging Governor Rick Snyder and Attorney General Bill Schuette to suspend efforts to contest Judge Bernard Friedman’s ruling.

  The Michigan governor's office says state agencies won't immediately recognize hundreds of same-sex marriages that were performed in the hours before an appeals court put on hold a judge's ruling that tossed out a state ban on gay marriage.

Legislation nearing Michigan Governor Rick Snyder's desk would let community service be a requirement to receive welfare benefits. The legislation is sponsored by Republican Senator Joe Hune of Livingston County's Hamburg Township. The state Human Services Department already includes community service among the work participation programs it can require for cash assistance recipients. A bill approved 91-19 Tuesday by Republican-led House would codify the practice into law.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Legislation nearing the desk of Gov. Rick Snyder would let high schools award diplomas to Vietnam War-era veterans who enlisted or were drafted before graduating. State law already lets schools grant diplomas to veterans who served honorably during World War II or the Korean War. The Michigan House on Tuesday unanimously approved a bill making Vietnam veterans eligible.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan lawmakers are looking to remove the terms "mental retardation" and "mentally retarded" from state law.  The legislation in Lansing incorporates some recent recommendations from a mental health commission appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder.

Governor Rick Snyder says the state could do a better job protecting foster children if it changed the way it paid for the service.  The governor unveiled a report Thursday that says the state should pay foster care agencies based on their performance. Right now, those agencies all get paid the same regardless of their track records or the needs of individual foster children.  "Let's focus on what's best for the child," said Snyder. "And the child shouldn't have to think about, worry about, or be concerned about who's bringing those services. They just want the outcomes.

YPSILANTI – Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has reappointed Ted Ligibel, a professor at Eastern Michigan University, to the State Historic Preservation Review Board. The appointment was announced Jan. 28, 2014. 

Ligibel is director of Eastern Michigan’s award-winning Historic Preservation Program, which is the largest such program in the nation, with 90 graduate students and 15 undergraduates currently enrolled.
