When Linda Watkins of Ypsilanti suffered a stroke about a week ago, she went to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ann Arbor for treatment.  The hospital had just recently received recognition for it's stroke rehabilitation center from the Joint Commission.

The commission named St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ann Arbor the first hospital in Michigan to be a certified stroke rehabilitation center of excellence.

Michigan has gotten another big boost in the battle against cancer.

A 13 hospital consortium lead by the Saint Joseph Mercy Health System has been awarded $10-million for cancer research by the National Cancer Institute.

Beth LaVasseur is Saint Joseph's Director of Research and Operations. She says some of the money will be used to cover the costs of running so many clinical trials.

There are plenty of ways the health care system in the African nation of Botswana appears to be doing a better job than the U.S. health care system, but both countries can also learn from each other.

That's the assessment from her Excellency Tebelelo Seretse, Botswana's ambassador to the U.S., who spoke with staff at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ann Arbor Monday afternoon. 

The ambassador says it can take a person in Washington D.C. two weeks to get an appointment with a private physician.

After more than five years as a member of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System (SJMHS), the Board of Trustees of Chelsea Community Hospital has decided to rename the hospital St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea.

The name was approved after several months of careful study, market research, mission discernment and input from community members, donors, physicians and colleagues.

The combination of an aging population and retiring doctors is creating a shortage of primary care physicians.  Eastern Michigan University and Saint Joseph Mercy Health System are teaming up on a new Physician Assistant program that will help address the problem.

St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor Hospital is showing off its new Outpatient Surgery Center this weekend. 

The facility boasts nine state-of-the-art operating rooms, and combines the hospital's orthopedic and non-orthopedic outpatient centers. 

The public is invited to a community open house at the 43-thousand square foot state-of-the-art Outpatient Surgery Center Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  on the St. Joe's campus, 5360 McCauley Drive.

St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor Hospital and Chelsea Community Hospital are among five Saint Joseph Mercy Health System hospitals to receive grades of "A" from The Leapfrog Group.

The independent industry watchdog group's latest Hospital Safety Score also awarded A's to St. Joseph Mercy Oakland, St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron and St. Mary Mercy Livonia.  St. Joseph Mercy Livingston received a "B".

St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and St. Joseph Mercy Livingston are joining the list of health care providers for people enrolled in UnitedHealthcare plans.

The expanded relationship means UnitedHealthcare participants will have access to Saint Joseph Mercy Health System's six hospitals, outpatient health centers and urgent-care facilities, and more than 25 specialty centers.

"We are thrilled to be able to help expand access to care for those in the local community," said Rob Casalou, President and CEO of St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and Livingston hospitals.
