One of the busiest stretches of freeway outside of Metro Detroit is US-23 north of Ann Arbor.  Work on a new "Flex Route" to ease some of that congestion has been underway for a year and finally opened for limited use on Wednesday.

89.1 WEMU’s Lisa Barry spoke with Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Kari Arend who gives an update on the progress of the Flex Route opening.

After a year of construction on US-23, the Flex Route project between Ann Arbor and Brighton is expected to open this week.

The North-South Commuter Rail, also known as WALLY, is a proposed project that would connect Ann Arbor and Howell with intermediate stops along the way.  A community meeting was held to inform the public on details about the project.

Everyone knows the change of seasons in Michigan means an increase in road construction.  A couple of new projects will likely mean bigger headaches for local commuters.

The US-23 corridor between M-14 and Brighton is known as a rush-hour problem. The Michigan Department of Transportation is hoping to alleviate some of that congestion through use of 'Dynamic Shoulders'. One local group supports some of MDOT's proposal, but would like to see something other than these 'dynamic shoulders.'

Over 60,000 cars a day use U-S 23 between M-14 and I-96.  It's frequently the site of accidents and slow morning and evening commutes.  The Michigan Department of Transportation hopes the Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority can help ease congestion.
