Ann Arbor School Board Chooses District Superintendent

Perhaps the second time is the charm. After being rejected by its first choice for district Superintendent, the Ann Arbor Board of Education has offered the job to the other finalist. As WEMU's Andrew Cluley reports, Jeanice Swift was offered the position yesterday and has agreed to enter contract negotiations.

Board Member Simone Lightfoot expressed concern that some community members will always see Swift as the second girl asked to dance. Lightfoot says while she voted against giving Swift the job in favor of slowing down the superintendent search, she is confident the board will rally around Swift if a contract can be negotiated. School Board member Glenn Nelson says a majority of the board think Swift has the qualifications necessary to succeed as superintendent. Nelson says he believes most community members won't care if she was the first or second choice, especially once she is on the job.
