Ann Arbor Teachers Want Alternatives To Salary Freeze

Ann Arbor teachers still hope to find solutions to the district's budget that won't leave last year's wage concession in place.  The district has set a deadline of next Monday to have an agreement in place or the entire contract will be terminated at the end of the month.

Ann Arbor Education Association President Linda Carter says they don't want to negotiate on the radio, but says they have been creative in offering some alternative spending cuts.

The union approved a 3 percent salary cut last year that will cost teachers an average of $4200 if it remains in place for next school year.  The wage freeze for all district employees covers almost half of the district's projected budget shortfall.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
