The next step was taken towards a plan to create a tunnel under the railroad tracks in Ann Arbor to provide easier access between Depot Street and the Huron River.
The project is intended to help stormwater more easily to the river and the tunnel would provide better access for pedestrians and bicyclists to get to the riverfront area for recreation.
Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor says this is a long term project.
"People have been talking about how to get underneath the railroad or how to get over the rail for some time to realize the vision of the Green Way and the Border-To-Border Trail, and this, I think, is putting both of those long-term major projects in the right direction," says Taylor.
Mayor Taylor says they first began talking about the tunnel under the railroad tracks in 2007, and if all goes as planned, Phase One should be completed by the late summer of early fall of 2018.
