Construction Season Underway In Washtenaw County

89.1 WEMU

As temperatures rise, crews will be out on many of the region’s roads.

Crews are currently working on theMcGregor Road Bridge in Dexter Township and dismantling another bridge over Wiard Road near Willow Run Airport.

Sheryl Siddall is an engineer for the Washtenaw County Road Commission.  She says both projects are an example of what happens when infrastructure isn’t maintained.

“Washtenaw County has many of the same challenges that the rest of the state does with respect to its infrastructure. We have under-invested in our infrastructure and we’re seeing the results of that.”

Siddall says Wiard Road will be closed until at least July, while McGregor Road will reopen in August.

Another closure at the intersection of Whittaker and Merrick Roads will begin in June.  Crews will install a roundabout.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has two highway projects underway in the region.  M-14 will remain closed through the end of the summer.  A second highway project begins at the end of April. MDOT will close I-275 from 5 Mile to I-96 for major repairs of the freeway.  An exact start date for the project has not yet been released.
