Digital Divas: Getting Young Girls Interested In New Career Paths

Eastern Michigan University

300 middle school girls from all over Michigan participated in a conference called "Digital Divas" Friday at Eastern Michigan University.

The event was created to get more girls interested in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math also known as STEM.  Right now, women make-up only 24% of that workforce.

EMU College of Technology professor and co-chair of the event, Dr. Susan Gregory, says that traditionally, girls have been discouraged from the STEM field.

"Girls have not been presented with those opportunities or the possibilities that they could be a software engineer, or that they could be coding or developing apps," Gregory says.

The event offered 20 hands-on workshops that including topics such as 3D printing and network  forensics.
