Eastern Michigan University Student Athletes Train Fight Sexual Violence

EMU

They train together for victories, and for athletes at Eastern Michigan University they'll also soon be training to fight sexual violence.

Starting next semester all Eastern athletic teams will begin going through active bystander training.

Snow Health Center Psychologist Melissa Rosenblum says the training is designed to give people the tools needed to stop harassing and potentially violent behavior. "We want people to feel a personal sense of responsibility when things are happening, and not to rely on somebody else, but to be able to do it in a healthy safe way," Rosenblum says.

Rosenblum says the training will be great for a team that already works together closely, but it's available for any group on campus.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
