Eastern Michigan University could be going completely tobacco free next summer.
The plan would ban the use of all tobacco products from university owned or operated facilities, including vehicles, starting in July 2015.
Assistant Vice President of Student Well Being Ellen Gold says the outright ban will be easier to enforce than the existing ban on tobacco within 25 feet of campus buildings. To ensure a smooth transition, Eastern officials have been talking with leaders at Central and Western Michigan Universities that went tobacco free earlier this year. "In the preparation what were some of the gaps, what were some of the issues they faced, what's been working for them, what's not," Gold says.

The Board of Regents will consider the tobacco ban at their meeting Friday.
