Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin will remain the school's leader through at least the end of the 2015-16 school year. The board of regents Tuesday approved a one year extension to her contract.
Martin's contract was set to expire at the end of the current school year, but Chair of the Board of Regents Francine Parker says it's important to get the deal done now. "Every time when you get close to the termination or contract expiration people are, you know, saying, 'Oh will she get renewed or she isn't.' And it becomes a focus as opposed to the leadership of the things we have. We have a very important agenda that Doctor Martin has been helping to promote," Parker says.
The agreement includes a $40,000 raise on top of her current $300,000 salary. That leaves Martin with the lowest reported salary of Mid-American Conference presidents and nearly $30,000 below the average of Michigan's public universities. Martin has served as president since 2008.
