Through a pilot program called "The SMART Project", Eastern Michigan University is educating students and staff on how to avoid becoming a victim of sexual assault and how to report it.
EMU was praised by state legislators when they presented their grant funded program in Lansing as officials start preparing for next year's budget. They especially liked that the project reaches out to different groups such as athletes and the LGBT community.
Ellen Gold is assistant Vice President for Student Well-Being. She says, "Sometimes messaging should be different. It resonates differently with different target groups [of students]."
EMU expects the number of sexual assaults that are reported to increase as more people feel comfortable reporting them.
