Eastern Michigan University will hire an additional 10 full-time police officers to help patrol the neighborhoods immediately next to campus.
Police Chief Bob Heighes says the new hires will "provide a crucial new dimension to our policing efforts."
The university is currently working to hire an additional four officers announced last month.
Chief Heighes says four more officers will be brought on board in May, and another two late next summer.
EMU is also creating a second "crime response unit" made up of a Sergeant and two officers to investigate specific "high-profile crimes".
